On February 28, 2009, Nokipa contacted the above company with regard to installing two Gumkillers for purposes of testing. At first, we observed how much chewing gum the guests carelessly threw away, especially in the entrance, the restaurant itself and the drive-in area. This yielded the following figures:
Entrance: between 100 and 150 new pieces of chewing gum discovered on the floor each week
Drive-in area: between 60 and 90 new pieces of chewing gum discovered on the ground each week
In addition, we also found chewing gum stuck under seats and tables in the restaurant again and again.
The restaurant’s customers often ignored the waste containers (conventional trash cans) already set up in the restaurant when they dispose of their chewing gum. Before this, the only attempt to solve the problem consisted in having the staff collect and dispose of chewing gum that had not yet been squashed down once each day by hand.
On March 15, 2009, two Gumkillers were installed. One of them in the entrance to the restaurant, the other directly at the drive-in area. Over a period of eight weeks, these were regularly emptied (at least once a week) by Nokipa or the McDonald’s staff. This yielded the following figures:
Entrance: between 80 and 130 new pieces of chewing gum found in the Gumkiller each week
Drive-in area: between 40 and 70 new pieces of chewing gum found in the Gumkiller each week
This corresponds to an average reduction in new chewing gum of between 65 and 85 percent. The cleaning expenses could be reduced accordingly. In addition, hardly any chewing gum was found in the restaurant once the Gumkillers were installed.
Even after a good twelve months, the customers at McDonald’s are still using the Gumkillers as well as ever.
